Dublin Street Art around Camden St ( mostly )

On Sunday last I spent quite a lot of time chasing down some things that were slightly off my normal track – Anna Doran’s new piece in Rathmines and The Bernard Shaw in particular. I took a bit of a roundabout route, starting in Phoenix Park, but didn’t really take many pictures until I got to Temple Bar.

I did get one great piece of North Side wit and wisdom on Little Britain Street. Seriously there really is a Little Britain St, it tees off onto Capel St. Anyway this is class.

 

From there it was off over to South Great Georges St via Temple Bar. Most of these are in order but these first two go together so I’ve put them here at the start. The stag is just off the end of Essex St East in Temple Bar and is the next picture I took on this trip and the Bull is on Camden St, near Anna Doran’s “Rain, Rain, Go Away”. The Bull gets better the more I look at it.

The route was heading up South Great George’s St, keep following as it became Aungier St, then Redmond’s Hill. Just as it crosses Kevin St / Cuffe St junction and becomes Wexford St I grabbed this new shutter art on Antoinette’s “Let them eat Gluten Free Cake” Bakery on Kevin St.

Heading on up Wexford St I found this Wolf / Lady combination on Protestant row,  a lane off to the east side of Wexford St,  and then having crossed over found this CANVAZ piece on an ESB substation on Camden Row off to the west, just down from BoBo’s burgers.

At this point Wexford St becomes Camden Street Lower and we have Anna Doran’s Rain Rain Go Away, a neat shutter design for Green Nineteen and a classic ADW “Things go better with Cop On” over the next block or two.

At this point there’s the first of two Maser pieces, U ARE ALIVE, on Grantham St off to the west. I’m going to throw in the second here, Maser’s tribute to Seamus Heaney’s “Nolle Timere”, as well but it’s actually about four blocks further out towards Portobello past The Bernard Shaw on Richmond Place South.

Then there is The Bernard Shaw. Tons of stuff here but I’ll stick to just a shot of the man himself and the pub standing proud amidst the surrounding carnage.

And then it was over the canal, past Portobello, and I finally got to Williams Park in Rathmines where Anna Doran has used this old warehouse-soon-to-be-a-coffeeshop for her new piece “Catch”.

On the way back I found a few smaller pieces, including one from Zlashing that I wasn’t expecting.

I’ve seen this woman’s silhouette in quite a few places around the city but this is the first time I’ve seen her commenting on anything. Quite funny.

Finally I was back in the center of town and grabbed a few bits that I’d missed on earlier trips. First a Traffic Light Control Box on Fade St. with obligatory “Woof!” sticker.

And finally this bit of sticker work on an ash tray is very clever.

Dublin Panoramas

I took a few detours on the way to and from work today and in between the showers grabbed some pretty nice panoramas on the phone.

Keep Calm, You’re in Cork now like.

Since I had to spend quite a lot more time in Cork than I’d originally planned this week I decided to make a determined attempt to root out some of the street art that I knew was there this morning.

In the process found quite a lot of stuff I was totally unaware of.

Earlier in the week I got a few shots of some cool pieces on Carey’s lane on my iPhone that are worth putting in here as a start:

 

The things I really wanted to capture today were ADW’s Wonky Tan and Evolution and I also wanted to get back to Tuckey Street to get a good shot of the “Keep Calm you’re in Cork now like” piece.

I came across the ADW pieces completely by accident, right at the start of the mission. Go me.

When I was parking in Paul St I saw these on the walls of Camden Palace across the river. So I went over to take some pictures.

And just around the corner on Pine St between Camden Place (the quay) and Devonshire Street there were the ADW pieces I was looking for.

With some pretty cool stuff by Psychonauts and some others that I couldn’t identify.

On the way back I found some interesting decorative stuff behind Sin-é, seems to be part of their overall look. Bonkers but very cool. This was one of three and I found a similar one across the river on a door in to The Mutton Lane Inn.

Heading back across the river I took a couple of decent shots of the mural behind the Opera House / Half Moon Theatre. Again this is only part of it, and the whole thing is well worth checking out as it’s very cool.

From there I made for Tuckey Street to get the a better shot of “Keep Calm you’re in Cork now like”. This time I moved the gate that was blocking the view and got the view I wanted. This is just so good.

While I was over there I also grabbed a couple of photos of interesting bits on Hanover Street. I assume that The Secret Garden is some sort of club but whatever it is the overall effect is clever. And clearly we have some Anonymous presence in Cork.

I was killing time at this stage and started poking about in the laneways. When I got to Mutton Lane I came across “The Pana Shuffle” – an incredible mural that covers pretty much one entire side of Mutton Lane. It’s been there 10 years and I never knew.

Finally I headed back over Oliver Plunkett St to see if that had anything to offer and found this cat tucked away quite discretely.

Walking down Phoenix Street I wasn’t at all surprised to find that Crane Lane had a huge piece on a wall out back.

Crossing over the South Mall I found these on an otherwise unassuming hoarding on Father Mathew Quay. I really like them.

At that point I had to head back to the hospital to pick up my Dad but as I was heading back to get my car out of Paul St. I took a detour over to the Coal Quay and found a huge mural which included this mug shot of Keano as Mao which I reckon was a good place to stop.

So that’s what I was doing, wandering around. Aiming for Hanover Quay and Grand Canal Square mostly after tracking down those RAIA pieces.

I had to try and take a snap of the Exhibition Centre and the Samuel Beckett bridge. The place was mobbed with photographers. all much more professional than me, tripods and everything but I’m happy enough with my hand held result.

The light was fading fast at this point – you can see above that the cars all had their lights on. It was properly getting dark when I hit Grand Canal Square. But the new lens was coping. Things were getting a bit noisy because I threw caution and ISO to the wind but it’s quite mad to be able to take hand held pictures like these in conditions that really were dark.

The place was mobbed, they had a movie projector up with a screen on a boat floating in the dock. Very, very cool.

The lighting was amazing.

You can see the movie screen in this view from the Hanover Quay side. It’s really funny looking at this because I couldn’t see those people when I took the picture. To be honest I could barely make out that the ambient lighting on the Theatre facade was green. I love this new lens.

I wasn’t alone in trying to get pictures.

And then there was the piece that brought me here. It’s still clearly a WIP but it is already pretty special. It’s going to be a real showcase piece when it’s finished. I’m going to call it the “Hanover Hoodie” until it gets a real name.

And I think this is going to be the ideal framing point for capturing this in future. I’ll have to bring a tripod with me once it’s finished. I’m thinking this is a much nicer picture than any I could ever have taken of the Exhibition Centre so I’m quite chuffed even if the noise level is atrocious once you blow it up to full resolution. Doesn’t matter, I love it.

At this point I was interrupted by my Dad needing tech support for his new uber-TV that he couldn’t figure out how to switch back to his SKY box after he’d somehow switched it over to analogue. I needed a pint to help me cope. But I got there and after a minor detour for some liquid refreshments in Mulligans I ventured into O’Connell St and then to Temple Bar. It was all very green and full of drunk people. They were very amiable drunk people it has to be said but there were an awful lot of them so I beat a hasty retreat as soon as I’d exhausted all the options of shooting Green Buildings. And once again ISO 1600 made it all possible and made it all very noisy. Then again, it was dark, very dark and I’m still a bit stunned that I was able to take hand held shots with no flash that turned out more or less OK when it was basically night time.
