Waterford Walls - 2018

Waterford Walls is back for its fourth year. It’s a major cultural event and the impact it has had on the look and feel of the city centre is incredible. I made a couple of trips this year to see the artists in action and then a follow up to catch as many of the finished pieces as I could find.

The artists at work – 2018

I got a few snaps of Sonny ( with Joe Caslin in the foreground, I think) , Monkey Bird crew, Animalitoland and Louis Masai as they finished off their work on Saturday the 25th.

Waterford Walls 2018 – new work

I came back the following week to do a more comprehensive wander around when all of the pieces were complete, and I took the chance to check in on some of the older pieces at the same time.

Mantra

Some people have told me they don’t like this redevelopment of The Apple Market area but I have to say I’m a fan of novel approaches to creating mixed use city zones and it makes a superb frame for any mural on that wall.

Dan Kitchener

I think the big piece by Dan Kitchener on the corner of Thomas St and O’Connell St. is the stand out work for this year for me.

Sonny and Monkey Bird Crew
I couldn’t take pictures that came even close to doing justice to these two, the light was just wrong when I got to them. The Sonny piece is kind of hard to find – it’s the corner of Dyehouse lane and Mary St. , one block north-west of Bridge St. . The Monkey Bird Crew is exquisitely detailed. Both are must see though.

Misc

No idea who these are by, I haven’t been able to ID them. Pretty funny as the one on the right is the Waterford Walls HQ.

Still Hanging in there

Joe Caslin ( from 2016)

The epic piece on the front of the Ard Rí remains in reasonable shape despite the exposed location. I think the Ard Rí is being demolished/rebuilt shortly so it probably wont make it to next year.

Still some of my all time favourites.

Dermot McConaghy 2016 / 2017

I know the one on the left is Dermot McConaghy as I was chatting to him when he was working on it ( and it’s signed). I’m think the one on the right is his work too, pretty certain despite the lack of signature.

Portrait of Dermot McConaghy (ArtistDMC) on the left, not sure who the other is, one of the artists/organisers I guess.
